Master Seminar "Theory and Methods in Strategy, Leadership, and Innovation Research"
The seminar was a great introduction into management research and showed how creative and exciting it can be. Thanks to this seminar, I realized I wanted to pursue an academic career.

The master seminar "Theory and Methods in Strategy, Leadership, and Innovation Research" is an integral part of our master-level courses.
Objectives
- In this seminar, you will gain comprehensive knowledge about the fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative empirical social research. You will learn how theories are build and which methods to use to test and expand theory.
- We aim to help you develop a critical attitude and own views towards theory in general, and specifically in management, leadership, and innovation research (e.g. Behavioral and Attention-based View of the Firm, Cognitive Framing, Executive Rhethorics, Managerial Cognition Theory,Theory of Discontinuous Technology, Upper Echelons Theory, etc.).
- To achieve this, we will teach you how to apply basic social research thinking and methods to closely scrutinize current scientific studies and research questions. On top, you will learn how to present and critically reflect research projects.
Please note that this seminar is a requirement for writing a master thesis at our Chair.

- April 8 (Monday): 7-8 p.m. Kick-off
- April 15 (Monday): 4-8 p.m. Basics of empirical management research I
- April 22 (Monday): 4-8 p.m. Basics of empirical management research II
- April 26 (Friday): 9 a.m-6 p.m. Presenting research powerfully; How to write a review; Qualitative research methods.
- April 29 (Monday): 4-8 p.m. Experimental research methods
- May 06 (Monday): 4-8 p.m. Quantitative research methods
- May 13 (Monday): 4-8 p.m. Mixed methods
- May 16-17 (Thursday and Friday): (time t.b.d. individually) Individual group feedback sessions I
- May 22 (Wednesday): (time t.b.d. individually) Individual group feedback sessions II
- May 24 (Friday): 9a.m.-2p.m. Final presentations
Target groups
All students enrolled in the programmes M.Sc. Business Administration and M.A. International Culture and Business Studies, and those who plan to write their master thesis at the Chair of Strategic Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Administrative modalities
- Course language: English
- Credits: 7 ECTS (4 SWS)
- The seminar takes place every term.
- Application is required.

Your grade will be based on a team presentation, a short team discussion session (editorial board), and an individual essay.
- Presentation (40%): ca. 30 minutes + 30 minutes of discussion
- Editorial Board (20%): 20 minutes
- Essay (40%): ca. 7 pages
We additionally, expect active participation throughout the course.
