On 31 May, Ingmar Weber, Research Director at the Qatar Computing Research Institute, was a guest at the Chair of Development Economics and held a lecture in the Distinguished keynote series on 'Digital Platform Ecosystems’ entitled „Collected for profit, repurposed for social good: Using advertisting data to monitor international development“. Ingmar Weber is a pioneer in using online user-generated data to say something about the offline world and society at large. So, data collected for the explicit purpose of selling advertisement and profit maximization can be repurposed for social good! For instance, he uses so-called audience estimates of advertising platforms to analyse international migration, digital gender gaps or wealth inequalities. The Chair of Development Economics and Ingmar Weber currently plan joint research in the area of the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases using online platforms.
