International Workshop on Explainability and Interpretability in Optimization

September 17–18, 2025 – Energie Campus Nuremberg

Purpose & Motivation

The workshop brings together international researchers and practitioners to discuss explainability and interpretability in mathematical optimization. While these concepts are gaining attention in areas like machine learning, they remain underexplored in optimization. The workshop aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, connect early-career and senior researchers, and bridge theory and practice.

Key topics include:

  • Conceptual frameworks for interpretability and explainability
  • Transparency in decision-making and solution processes
  • Human-centered optimization and model understanding
  • Fairness, interactivity, and rule-based approaches
  • Practical relevance and application-level insights

Participation

Participation is by invitation only, limited to ~20 researchers and practitioners. The group includes early-career researchers, senior academics, and industry experts to ensure diverse perspectives and meaningful exchange.

Format & Structure

The two-day event will combine research presentations and interactive working sessions. The goal is to:

  • Discuss current research and open challenges
  • Explore real-world case studies
  • Initiate collaborations and future research directions
