Both our individual differences and characteristics of a message may contribute to people’s ability to recognize false news. In her talk, Victoria Vziatysheva will summarize research findings on the factors driving belief in mis- and disinformation. She will also share results of her recent experiment testing the influence of confirmation bias on trust in news among media professionals and ordinary social media users. Furthermore, she will discuss how cognitive biases and features of the content may contribute to susceptibility to disinformation and propaganda in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Victoria Vziatysheva is a research associate and a doctoral student at the Chair of Political Communication with a Focus on Eastern Europe and the Post-Soviet Region. She studies online communication, the spread of mis- and disinformation, and trust in media. In her doctoral project, she researches how pro-government media in Russia employ the fact-checking genre to facilitate state narratives on the war in Ukraine.
