This book presents a collection of some of Stephan’s most important writings on the topic of gender inequality. This book honours his academic life of which he has spent the last two decades at the University of Göttingen. In 2019, at the age of 53, Stephan was forced to retire from his chair for development economics, as he suffers from an incurable illness, which very sadly prevents him from further pursuing his career. We could have selected many more articles from his long list of over 200 publications — which also contribute to other areas, such as the measurement of poverty and inequality and environmental economics — but we think the studies presented here are certainly some of his most influential pieces. Moreover, these articles do not only speak to academics, but are also relevant for policy makers and practitioners, largely because of his clear writing and straightforward, detailed policy implications. Stephan’s ability and willingness to write in accessible language explains why his work is not only widely read and cited in research, but also applied in practice. (Michael Grimm and Isabel Günther)
