The seminar is mainly concerned with two focal topics: (1) What constitutes the field of leader humor in leadership theory and why is it highly relevant from a theoretical and practical perspective? (2) What are best practices in content analysis and how can we use such methods in the context of leader humor?
In this quest, we will give you an overview of the importance of stable character traits in leader personality and leader communication research and their importance for processes within and outside of an organization. In this context, we will focus on the highly relevant and multi-facetted concept of leader humor that is increasingly gaining attention in the research community. Afterwards, we will introduce you to approaches and methods from qualitative empirical research, with a particular focus on quantitative content analysis techniques. Throughout our in-classroom session, you will have opportunities to try out and experience some of the theories and methods in-person. Throughout the semester, you will then get to apply a content analysis technique on real-life leader humor cases.
The seminar is worth 3 ECTS, the workload is 1 SWS. There will be a mandatory introductory session, that will take place “on block” on November 11th and November 12th, 2019. During the rest of the semester, the students then proceed to work individually on their projects for which the supervisors will provid topics. The seminar will be graded based on a short, written paper of approximately 7 pages and the thoroughness and quality of the coded materials.
