Live-Discussion – organized by Science Advances – about Prepublication Sharing of Research Results
If you had to bet, who do you think would be more likely to divulge their research findings pre-publication, a biologist or a mathematician? (Answer below.)
Relatedly, and as you may know, the stakes of sharing scientific research before publication are complex. Now, a new study that surveyed more than 7,000 active faculty researchers in nine sicentific fields looks at why scientists in some fields routinely share results before publishing, while others don’t.
The study’s authors say three core features of a discipline determine whether its adherents are likely to divulge data prepublication, or not.
Reasons for sharing are different, and sometimes at odds – like to attract new researchers to the field versus to “deter others from working on their exact problem”.
Turns out mathematicians, too, are among the most likely to disclose their research, before publishing, and definitely more likely to than biologists.
