The number of interfirm collaborations has increased steadily over the last decades. This growth has been particularly marked in high-tech industries where the number of alliances has more than doubled in the last 20 years . Especially in the field of research and development (R&D), collaborating is a means to enhance innovation by combining the resources of two firms . Despite their value generation potential, the failure rate of strategic alliances is in the range of 30% to 50% . In this seminar, we will explore the formation, governance and performance issues in strategic alliance management. Next to reviewing central literature on collaboration in knowledge-intense domains, we will add a practical perspective by analyzing data on real-world alliances from the bio-pharmaceutical industry.
