Irene Furlani, Doktorandin im Graduiertenkolleg DPE, und Michael Grimm (PI im DPE) organisierten gemeinsam mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen der Universität Gadjah Mada einen Workshop zum Auftakt eines neuen Projekts, das die Integration von Lentera Desa, einer agrarwissenschaftlichen Wissensplattform, in die landwirtschaftliche Beratungsarbeit zum Ziel hat. Das Projekt basiert auf einem zweiseitigen randomisierten kontrollierten Experiment, welches sich an landwirtschaftliche Berater sowie an Millennial Farmers in der Großregion Yogyakarta richtet. Die Studie soll dabei helfen, kosteneffiziente Lösungen zur Förderung nachhaltiger kleinbäuerlicher Landwirtschaft durch digitale Plattformdienste zu identifizieren.

Am Workshop nahmen Wissenschaftler, Vertreter des Landwirtschaftsministeriums – insbesondere der Beratungsbehörde –, landwirtschaftliche Berater und Landwirte teil. Die Erhebungen für die Basisdaten der Studie wurden im Februar und März 2025 durchgeführt. Die randomisierten Interventionen werden im Mai und Juni 2025 umgesetzt. Eine spätere Folgebefragung im Laufe des Jahres soll erste Auswirkungen bewerten.

Neue Publikation in The Journal of Economic Inequality: “Local inequality and crime: New evidence from South Africa” von Nicolas Büttner.

Seine Studie berücksichtigt verschiedene Ungleichheitsdimensionen (Einkommen, Bildung, Gesundheit, ethnische Heterogenität) und sowohl Gewalt- als auch Eigentumsdelikte. Hierzu kombinierte er Kriminalstatistiken der südafrikanischen Polizeibehörde mit sozioökonomischen Daten aus zwei Volkszählungen und Haushaltserhebungen. Die Studie bestätigt einen starken Zusammenhang zwischen Gewaltverbrechen und Einkommensungleichheit sowie ethnischer Heterogenität. Dies wird durch die sogenannte „Strain Theorie“ gestützt, die besagt, dass „Relative Deprivation“ kriminelles Verhalten durch Frustration und soziale Entfremdung begünstigt. Die Studie zeigt außerdem, dass steigende Einkommensungleichheit mit mehr Eigentumsdelikten einhergeht, was jedoch durch Schutzmaßnahmen in Gebieten mit hoher Ungleichheit abgemildert wird.

Nicolas Büttner ist Alumni des Masterprogramms Development Studies und ehemaliger Doktorand des Lehrstuhls. Nach seiner Promotion an der Universität Passau im Jahr 2022 setzte Nicolas seine Forschungsaktivitäten an der ETH Zürich fort und ist dort als Postdoktorand und Research Manager der Development Economics Group tätig.

Seminar im Bayerischen Wald

Vom 16. bis zum 18. Januar 2025 war die 2023/2024 Kohorte des Master Development Studies in Neuschönau im Bayerischen Wald, um die Forschungsvorhaben für die Masterarbeit zu diskutieren, welche bis Ende Februar eingereicht werden müssen.

Ein Höhepunkt des Seminars war die Wanderung auf den verschneiten Gipfel des Lusen am Freitagnachmittag. Der Weg nach unten wurde mit Schlitten angetreten. Für viele Teilnehmer die erste Rodelerfahrung – viele spektakuläre Stürze, aber keine Verletzen.

Master seminar on "Replicating Empirical Research in Public and Development Economics: Topics on Digitalization and Platforms" in the next summer term

In the summer semester 2025, the Chair of Development Economics will offer a Master seminar on "Replicating Empirical Research in Public and Development Economics: Topics on Digitalization and Platforms" together with the Chair of Public Economics, StudIP course number 35866.

The seminar will be held in English and is open to Master students of the University of Passau who have successfully participated in either "Natural and Field Experiments" or "Evaluation of Development Policies".

Scientific debates in climate and environmental economics (Master-Seminar in the summer term 2025)

Environmental challenges, and climate change in particular, are at the center of debates about key policy choices that will set the course for a viable future. These debates are crucially shaped by scientific discoveries and controversies. In this course we will examine important literatures on burning issues in climate and environmental economics. We will take a meta-scientific perspective, that is, we will discuss individual policy evaluations, but also systematic reviews and meta-analyses. We will examine how pieces of evidence are generated, how evidence is synthetized and whether a scientific consensus is reached or not. In doing so, we consider the role of biases in the publication process and the role of normative perspectives. The course will be interactive and discussion oriented. The aim of the course is to use economic concepts to structure parts of the climate and environmental policy debate, and to critically reflect on scientific findings using scientific methods.

The seminar will take place as a block seminar around July 10/11 2025 at the University of Passau.

The syllabus will be published by March 2025, topics will be assigned at the beginning of April 2025.
