A University Master in Economics and Business |
Since 2008 the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Passau offers the Master of Arts in International Economics and Business. Each winter semester 30 outstanding students from Germany and abroad are selected for this course of studies.
Substantiated by many rankings, the courses of economics and business studies in Passau are among the best in Germany. The students of the Masters degree in International Economics and Business follow in this tradition.
Graduates are qualified for management positions in international business firms and public organisations. They are equipped with advanced knowledge on the economics of trade, investment and finance, their planning and projection as well as the underlying opportunities and risks. They are employed with the capacity to analyse business location and investment decisions both in industrial countries and in emerging markets. They are trained in identifying the effects and deficits of global institutions, as well as corporate responses to international opportunities. This embraces issues of corporate and public compliance, value systems and integrity.
The Masters program takes two years and is examined in its entirety under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). A total of 120 credits have to be achieved.
The course of studies teaches the students to analyse economic and business issues in an integrated fashion. It is based primarily on economic methods supplemented by business administration and empirical elements. The programs of other faculties will also be expediently integrated in an interdisciplinary module along with soft skills and the opportunity to acquire in-depth specialist foreign language skills. A focus of this course of studies will be on the close interaction between empiricism and theory. Case study work is a central part of the course, supported by group work, project work and seminars.
The short ways of a campus-university without “educational mass production” warrant individual attendance. The outstanding standing of our education rests upon the combination of theory with practice, ensured by methodologically wide and interdisciplinary course offerings. The language teaching’s high reputation and the many
international partnership programs offer our students unique opportunities for an international career.
In the course of the degree, theoretical and statistical basics are taught (econometrics, microeconometrics, time series analysis, game theory) and three areas of specialization (examples of courses are given in brackets):
1. Globalization, Geography and the Multinational Firm (International Trade; Trade Policy, International Integration and World Trade Systems; New Economic Geography; Business Location Theories, Clusters and Networks; International Taxation, International Tax Competition; International Value Added Processes)
2. International Finance (Monetary Foreign Trade; Money, Interest and Inflation; Advanced Macroeconomics; Empirical Finance; Case Studies in Monetary Economics; Capital Market Theory; Financial Market Theory; risk management; business valuations)
3. Governance, Institutions and Anticorruption (Economics of Corruption; Designing Institutions: Rules, Discretion and Independence; Incentives and Regulation in a Theory of Anticorruption; Institutions and Growth; Auditing Theory; Case Studies in Corporate Fraud and Forensic Accounting; Political Economy)
The degree course is enriched by many initiatives of students in acquiring practical experience and further training. One example is the well-established initiative “Volkswirte in Passau” (Economists in Passau), organized by students and faculty and which attracts a good deal of outside attention.
Students are also expected to spend the third semester at
a foreign partner university. We support this with partnerships and the generous recognition of credits acquired abroad. Responsibility for organizing the semester rests with the individual.

Within the Master of International Economics and Business, stays abroad are particularly encouraged. The Academic Foreign Office of the University of Passau organizes places
at more than 40 partner universities. Traditionally, about one third of students spends a part of their studies abroad. This puts Passau at the very top German universities. Courses are partly taught in English and by visiting lecturers from abroad.

Applicants for the complete Masters must have an above average university degree (Bachelor or “Diplom”) with an economics or business focus and an adequate command of both English (
level B2) and German (
level TDN 4).
Upon request this examination can be carried out by telephone.
The closing date for applications is June 30 each year. The application forms are available below
Downloads. Applicants can submit their transcript of records and turn in the first diploma later.
Guest students from Masters courses of other universities can spend one semester at the University of Passau. In the fall semester many courses are taught in English, allowing participation without the command of German.
